Inexpensive Ways to Celebrate the Holidays in Chicago

Inexpensive Ways to Celebrate the Holidays in Chicago

It’s that time of year, where we’re all stressed out about our holiday shopping. By this time, we’ve all spent our paychecks on everyone else and are living off rice for dinner. Although it’s hard, try to take time to enjoy what this city has to offer during the holidays. There are ways to enjoy the holidays in Chicago without breaking the bank. Here are some things to help you get in the holiday spirit:

christkindlmarket - holidays in chicago

The Christkindlmarket
The Christkindlmarket is a little German wonderland full of Schnitzel, chocolate, potato pancakes, brats and don’t forget the hot spiced wine in the collectible boot mug. It isn’t a German festival without a boot and/or bier in hand, right? The market isn’t just full of food, there’s also multiple vendors selling anything from ornaments to toys. If you’re not looking to spend a lot of money, just walking through the festival is enough to get you in the holiday spirit. Location: Daley Plaza, 50 W Washington St.

Admission: Free. Last day is Christmas Eve!

Zoo Lights - Holidays in Chicago

Zoo Lights
Zoo Lights transforms the Lincoln Park Zoo into beautiful light combinations and displays. This is a great event to grab a hot chocolate/coffee with friends and family, walk around and sing-a-long with the musical light shows. Typically you would want to dress warm for this event but this winter, Chicago is experiencing some kind of heat wave (I’m not complaining). Just gather your loved ones via calling, texting, Facebooking or whatever the kids are doing these days and prepare to be amazed!

Location: Lincoln Park Zoo, 2001 N Clark St.
Admission: Free. Last day is January 3rd!!

Holiday Train - Holidays in Chicago

Holiday Train
It is a mission every year to catch the Holiday Train. Can you imagine a better way to cheer up after a hard day at work? The train is decked out in lights, decorations, as well as Santa and his reindeer. Some may vision themselves traveling to the North Pole, never to return to adult life but don’t get your hopes up or forget your train stop! Last day is December 23rd!!

Caroling Cloud Gate - Holidays in Chicago

Caroling at Cloud Gate – Millennium Park Chicago
Work around the loop? Make a pit stop at Millennium Park, Friday night. You could finish your Christmas shopping to the same old department store recordings or come to the park to hear some truly, talented individuals. Fa la la la la…

Location: Millennium Park, 201 E Randolph St.
Admission: Free. Last day is December 18th!!

Hollywood Mirror & Ragstock

Hollywood Mirror & Ragstock
Getting into the holiday spirit isn’t just about events, it’s also about style too. Hollywood Mirror & Ragstock are stocked up to make you a hit at your next holiday and/or ugly sweater party. They have multiple choices from sweaters, turtle necks, hair pieces, accessories, etc. If you’re a crafty individual, I’m sure you can put something together that’s just as ugly… or pretty but for those of us who are lazy, take the brown, red or purple line to Belmont.

Address: 812 W Belmont Ave.

Home Alone - Holidays in Chicago

25 Days of Christmas

If you don’t want to leave the house and curling up on the couch seems like a more appealing option, tune into ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas or pop in that favorite holiday classic. To some of us, the holidays just aren’t the same without Buddy the Elf, the Grinch and for those Chicagoans, the classic Clark Griswold & Kevin McCallister.
