Tax Tips From The Wise….

Tax Tips…………. From The Wise

I know that some of us are dreading doing our taxes and that adulting can be hard, but don’t delay the inevitable any longer. For those that have already filed…. give yourself a solo high five. If you’re a little overwhelmed, here’s a few tax tips to help you get started….

Tax Tipsimage via SpaceClear

1. File as early as possible: We’re almost down to the last month, I think we’ve procrastinated long enough. If you owe money, waiting till the last minute gives you less time to save up to make the payment. If you’re getting money back, the sooner you file…. the sooner you’ll get to treat yo self. After a stressful year at the job, you deserve it!

2. Organize your documents: It’s in your best interest (if you’re expecting a lot of write-offs) to come up with an organization system for all your receipts & forms. Thanks to technology these days there are digital services that will automatically import, organize & store your important documents. Make sure to do your research and pick the method that best suits you. Missing documents & miscalculations can only hurt you, so get organized!…. I know it’s easier said than done. Many deductions are often overlooked, so be sure to educate yourself as your organizing your documents. There’s an immense number of resources all over the internet.

Also, if you have a 401k, stocks, bonds, or CD’s, you might want to check with your financial institution to see the tax implications of the interest. For those of you with student loans (single tear shed), then you should of received a form 1098-E from your lender. This form allows you to get a student loan tax credit for the interest you’ve paid.

3. Choose your filing method: For those who have gone through a life change such as marriage/divorce, made a major purchase or if you own a business, save yourself the stress and pay an accountant. Someone with the proper expertise will be beneficial in the long run. If you’re filing single and have limited paperwork, take the time to research the different services by H&R Block, Turbo Tax, Tax Act & etc. These online services have become more simplistic & affordable for the average tax filer.

4. Deadlines: Note that individual income tax returns are due April 18, 2016!! Taxpayers in Maine & Massachusetts have until April 19, 2016. If you’re unable to make the deadline, be prepared to file an extension.

5. Beware of Identity theft & scams. Think twice about emails/phone calls asking for personal information. If it sounds too good to be true…. It probably is.

If these tips don’t help, find yourself a local accountant…. It’s better for everyone.

St. Patrick’s Day – Chicago Style

by Christine Hadley

St. Patrick’s Day – Chicago Style

I may be biased, but I don’t think any other city does it better when it comes to St.  Patrick’s Day. Whether you’re new to the city or visiting from out of town, you owe it to yourself to get the full experience. Irish or not, you picked the right city to celebrate in. The only requirement for this holiday… YOU MUST WEAR GREEN! Don’t like the color green… just wear it to avoid those annoying people, that think it’s funny to consistently pinch you. It gets old…. real quick! The official holiday is March 17th, but in Chicago the festivities begin March 12th this year, so plan your day accordingly:

River Dyeing

It wouldn’t be St. Patty’s in Chicago without the tradition of dyeing the Chicago River green. This Chicago tradition sets itself apart from any other city. Be sure to grab some friends, a coffee & maybe an umbrella? Don’t worry about costs, this transformation can be viewed for FREE!

When: Saturday, March 12th at 9:00 A.M.

Where: Chicago River (Columbus & Wacker)

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

A great way to kick off any celebration is with a parade. In addition to traditional floats & marching bands, you should expect to see bagpipers & Irish dancers. After you’ve seen enough of the emerald river, head on over to the parade and get into the Irish spirit. Just like the river dyeing, this event can be seen for free.

When: Saturday, March 12th at 12:00 P.M.

Where: Columbus Drive (between Balbo & Monroe)

Local Pub

There are numerous pubs around the city of Chicago. If you’re sticking to tradition, then you should probably hit up your favorite Irish pub to enjoy classic dishes such as corned beef & cabbage or shepherd’s pie. It wouldn’t be a celebration without a beverage in hand, green or not. You may hear an abundance of Flogging Molly & Dropkick Murphys, so cheers!

Green Attire

The dress code for this holiday is pretty easy, just wear green. If you’re feeling extra spirited and want to go that extra mile, check out Hollywood Mirror in Lakeview. This store has the most fabulous holiday wear. If you’re looking for something truly unique, this is the store for you! They have everything from the traditional green t-shirt, to accessories, tutus, suits and so on. Be creative…. or not, it doesn’t really matter.

Location: 812 W Belmont – Close to the Belmont (Brown/Purple/Red) Line

For more information on events this weekend, check out: http://www.choosechicago.com/st-patricks-day/ The options are really endless for things to do this weekend, so choose wisely.

Have a great St. Patrick’s Day!!…… technically it’s not the day, so happy celebrating! Be safe!
