Looking for Ways to Give Back?

by Christine Hadley

Looking for Ways to Give Back?

It’s easy to get distracted with our daily lives, causing us to forget about how important it is to give back. There are numerous causes ranging from homelessness, tutoring, working with the elderly, gardens/greenhouses, animals and more. I think the best way to narrow it down is to pick the area you feel most passionate about. If you don’t have the money to donate, volunteering your time can be just as rewarding. If you don’t have the time to volunteer, look into different ways to donate. But when it comes down to it, you don’t have to be rich to make a difference. A simple gesture is a great way to show your appreciation. Not only does giving back make you feel great, it’s also way for to meet/network with people who have similar passions as yourself. This is one thing you shouldn’t be afraid to do on your own. There are multiple ways for companies & individuals to get involved around the City of Chicago.

Here are a few ways to get you started:

1. Lakeview Food PantryApartment People recently hosted a donation box and volunteered at the Lakeview Food Pantry. The Lakeview Food Pantry has two locations working to eliminate hunger. As a company you can host a barrel to get the community and employees involved. You’ll have to reach out to them to see what their most needed items are, but all non-perishable & non-expired food items are appreciated. This is also a fun place to volunteer. Employees of Apartment People came together to clean & organize the Oakdale location. If you’re looking to become a regular volunteer of the Lakeview Food Pantry, contact them for more information on their next New Volunteer Training Session.

2. Chicago Coalition for the Homeless – CCH is an amazing non-profit that’s working to prevent and end homelessness. They also help those in need get access to jobs, training & public schools. Part of their mission is that they believe housing is a human right in a just society.

If you’re looking for way to donate & give back to their cause, check out their website:     http://www.chicagohomeless.org/

3. Little Elves of Love – “Building a smile, one child at a time.” This charity partners with the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago, to comfort children during the holiday season. As a company you can help out by hosting a toy donation box at your office. Check out their Facebook page to see the direct result of such selflessness. The group dresses up as elves and delivers the gifts around the beginning of December. Their hard work & dedication is rewarded by the many smiles seen on the faces of these kids.

4. PAWS Chicago – Calling all animal lovers, I found the purrfect charity for you! 😉 The mission of PAWS is to build no kill communities, to end the overpopulation of homeless animals and to transform animal welfare. To accomplish this they provide spray/neuter services and help you through the process of adoption from one of their cageless/no kill adoption centers. PAWS has hundreds of pets waiting for you to bring them home. You can give back by donating, volunteering and fostering homeless pets.

5. Chicago Cares – “Chicago cares creates volunteer experiences that connect people and communities to meet critical needs and build a stronger Chicago.” This non-profit provides numerous volunteer opportunities including education, health & wellness, job readiness and so much more. You can easily view their volunteer calendar to see what opportunity best suits you. If you’re just looking to get involved and don’t have a specific cause in mind, Chicago Cares has a variety for all interests.
